Home Practice

In addition to attending rehearsals, students are expected to practice at home a minimum of 90 minutes a week, however, more is encouraged.  Students get the most benefit and make the quicket progress when they practice for 10-20 minutes daily, rather than trying to cram all of their practice time into one or two long sessions. Instruments should go home after each rehearsal so that student can work on what was practiced during our lesson in class.

Playing an instrument is a very rewarding experience, but without the proper amount of practice, it can become very frustrating.  Here are some tips for practice:

  • Create a regular practice routine (right after dinner, right before bed, etc.).

  •  Find a place to practice that is free from distractions such as the TV.

  •  Use a music stand when practicing (a folding wire stand can be purchased for about $10.00).  This will help students maintain good posture and develop better playing habits.

  • Remain nearby during practice times as often as possible.

  • Praise your child's efforts and achievements.

  • Never use practice as punishment.

  • Allow your child to perform for the family if he or she is comfortable.
